Dr. Weldy Message May 1, 2020

05/01/2020
All of us at MVCTC have greatly missed interacting with the students since school has been closed due to COVID-19. Our staff members are a very special group and have created a #MVCTCStrong video to share our words of encouragement with our students. I encourage your child to watch the video. It is located on the districts main webpage just below the link for updated information on COVID-19. There are also other positive student spotlights. Please take a few minutes to read a few of these articles. We truly have some amazing students! In this crazy, chaotic time, we can’t forget that it is sometimes the small things that can make a huge impact. I hope you and your child enjoy the video!
Important guidance on a number of issues has been released by state officials this week. We have been patiently waiting on their frequently shifting guidance to be solidified to avoid making any rash decisions that would need to be changed with each adjustment. Some of the details that have been shared with districts, especially involving graduation ceremonies, have changed four or more times in less than a week. With that said, I am now confident enough that the guidance has solidified so that we can proceed with a number of important decisions.
Several important items posted on the district’s website now include the Extended School Closure Order, which closes Ohio schools through June 30th and the Extended Stay at Home Order, which have both been enacted by Dr. Acton, Ohio Director of Health.
With the closure of school buildings across the state until June 30th and the extension of the Stay at Home Order, MVCTC now has direction to make decisions in regards to the annual Senior Recognition Ceremony. Given Governor DeWine’s guidance provided earlier this week, gatherings with more than 10 people are prohibited. This restriction on gatherings is further reinforced by the local county health departments and the Ohio Department of Education. In addition, districts have been asked by the Ohio Department of Education to hold planned ceremonies as close to the original date as possible, and to do so in a virtual format, if possible. With that said, MVCTC will plan on holding a virtual Senior Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 22nd at 5pm. This is a week later than our previously scheduled ceremony; please make note of the change.
A committee of MVCTC administrators has been selected to develop and implement the virtual ceremony. Since this is a new process, specific details are still being developed and will be shared at a future date. Our main goals was to inform you about the change as quickly as possible so that you can make adjustments.
Senior Career Passports will be mailed to student’s home 3-4 weeks after the recognition ceremony on Friday, May 22.
During this unprecedented pandemic, the district understands that this solution will not meet everyone’s expectations. We, too, wish that we could offer the traditional ceremony to honor our outstanding seniors. With that said, this option will allow the most students to participate while providing closure to our seniors so they may move on to work, college, and military commitments.

Next, given the newest orders from Governor DeWine, the district is working on dates when MVCTC can safely open campus to allow parents and students to pick up personal items and drop off school-owned items such as textbooks. Once again, the current restrictions do not allow us to have much flexibility. Please know that the district is working on a plan and the details will be shared once they are solidified.

As we can start to see the end of the year ahead, the district has posted updated grading policy guidelines for 4th quarter. This updated guidance has been developed to help ensure instructor flexibility when grading student assignments during 4th quarter. There are students who have had COVID-19 related issues that have posed a significant barrier to their education and we want to be sympathetic to their struggles. These guidelines are posted on the district’s website and can be found after clicking on the COVID-19 update on the main page.
