Carriage Hill Park Manager Visits MVCTC Natural Resource Management Class

11/29/2016

Englewood, Ohio - The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Natural Resource Management class received a visit on November 9, from Steve Sherman, the current Park Manager for Carriage Hill MetroPark.

Carriage Hill is a 16,000 acre park used for education, conservation, and recreation purposes. The park has 35-miles of trails to walk, hike, or ride horses. It has rich forests, thickets, meadows, and prairies that the trails go through. They even have a 1880s reenactment historical farm that has actual animals they would use in that time period.

Steve Sherman has been working for the Five Rivers MetroParks since 2001. He explained what Five Rivers is and what they do for environmental education and conservation. He spoke to the seniors about how he oversees and maintains all 16,000 acres that make-up Carriage Hill. The seniors learned about the fisheries that are maintained and about wildlife management projects that are held at Carriage Hill. They also learned about employment opportunities and possible internships with Five Rivers. Mr. Sherman also explained about a project to build a bridge with the MetroParks as a class.

Having Mr. Sherman speak with the Natural Resource Management class was very beneficial. It allowed the students to learn about a future career path they could take and gave them a better understanding of what it means to work in an environmental occupation. Below are some comments from the seniors.

“I learned that working for the Metro Parks was a lot easier than I first expected.” Tony Turner, Senior, Twin Valley South

“I didn’t realize there were so many opportunities working for the Metro Parks.” Tristen Mullins, Senior, Northridge

“It was good to receive knowledge from a person who has so much experience and knowledge in the environmental field.” Zach Edgin, Senior, Tri County North
