Englewood, Ohio - The Miami Valley Career Technology Center’s students are gearing up to celebrate Career Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) week. This is a week to recognize and honor the different CTSO’s the school has to offer. The week also contains fun dress-up days and a competition fundraiser with the proceeds being donated to Special Olympics.
One of the CTSOs participating is the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). This organization’s purpose is to help students develop leadership and interpersonal communication skills to create the leaders of tomorrow. MVCTC FCCLA is made up of Juniors and Seniors from the Hospitality, Culinary Arts, and Early Childhood programs. Each year students complete projects in areas that are important to them. To complete a project students may hold their own fundraisers, volunteer, conduct surveys, design poster boards, and write speeches. Students then have the opportunity to present their project in front of judges and the Regional, State, and National levels. Students enjoy what the club has offer and what they take away from their experiences. Club member Alexis Spencer says, “FCCLA has taught me good leadership skills”. Club Member Alexis Bellomy also adds, “I’ve learned how to succeed as a team and an individual through FCCLA”.
This year the advisors are; Tammi Newbourn, Cortney Bergbigler, Elizabeth Gratton, Connie Marshal, and Alicia Newman. Newman explains the basics of the organization, “Students develop strong leadership skills through individual and team events. Competing in national FCCLA competitions is an honor and rewards students for their hard work and dedication.”
Last year the national level competition was held in San Diego, California. MVCTC was represented by ten Early Childhood students, competing in five different events. They were joined by three students from the Culinary Arts program. The student represented MVCTC well by earning two silver ratings and six gold ratings in their respective events.
FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. Everyone is part of a family, and FCCLA is the only national Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities by addressing important personal, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
For over 45-years, MVCTC has been providing career technical education for 27 partner school districts encompassing five counties in Southwest Ohio. MVCTC is dedicated to providing in-demand workforce training for youth, adults, and organizations in the Miami Valley.
