MVCTC Biotechnology Student Attends Washington Leadership Academy

09/22/2017

Washington D.C. – Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Biotechnology senior, Peyton Phillips (Northwestern), attended the 11th Annual HOSA Washington Leadership Academy (WLA) on September 16-19, 2017. Phillips is the Ohio HOSA State Treasurer for the 2017-2018 school year.

The HOSA website describes the event as “It’s truly something to be able convene in the Capitol of our great nation with HOSA Leaders from across the nation, to learn and grow as leaders in an ever-evolving, ever-diversifying organization that stands at the forefront in the bridging of leadership and quality health science education. The 11th Annual Washington Leadership Academy features dynamic workshops and interactive activities to teach HOSA leaders to be better advocates of HOSA’s mission and vision.  This action-packed experience is the highest level of leadership development for HOSA-Future Health Professionals.”

“WLA was one of the best leadership experiences I have had in my life. It taught me so much about who I am and how to treat others. I learned about the different types of leaders and how each type contributes to a successful organization,” Phillips said of his trip to Washington D.C.

Molden added, “WLA is a great experience for students and advisors. HOSA State Officers truly get the opportunity to learn and practice what leadership is through workshops, networking, and hands on practice. As an advisor we had the opportunity to attend leadership workshops and network with other advisors and teachers.”

While attending the HOSA WLA, Phillips and Molden were able to attend industry tours that included the D.C Medical Examiner’s office. Donell Harvin, the Administrator for the ME’s office, shared his experiences from being at Ground Zero as an EMT during 9/11 to his current role overseeing Emergency Management and Forensic Recovery Response. Students and advisors also had the opportunity to meet with their representatives in Congress to discuss the importance of career technical education.
