MVCTC FFA Veterinary Science students win 1st Place Banner and the State Competition for Animal Behavior, Welfare, and Husbandry.  The Junior Veterinary Science MVCTC FFA members recently competed in this contest at the State Fairgrounds during Spring Animal Health Career Development Events.  Animal Behavior and Animal Welfare Education has a responsibility to ensure an educated public and to help prepare students to enter careers in the industry.

The purpose of the Animal Behavior and Welfare Career Development event is to stimulate student interest and to promote education in the basics of understanding animals’ evolutionary biology, their biological needs, and indicators of differing levels of welfare and how to holistically evaluate different facilities, husbandry, and management.  Also, this CDE will provide recognition for those who have demonstrated skills and competencies as a result of animal behavior and welfare instruction.  This contest is aligned with the Agriculture and Environmental Systems Career Field Pathways for Animal Science and Management.

MVCTC FFA Veterinary Science members that made up the team were: Alyssa Conley, Victoria Hinkle, Lily Preston, Alex Hayes, and Brittany Ployer.  During the online test, students were given general knowledge questions and animal behavioral profiles.  The team went to the finals in 2nd place.  At the finals, the students as a team had to put together an enrichment item for the species, wolf, and then make a presentation about their enrichment design.  Students also made a live audit of a hermit crab and had the privilege to head to the Ohio State University Sheep and Goat Barns for a live audit of animals’ husbandry.

Congratulations to this great success!! The students will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in May for their accomplishments.
