05/08/2019
Every year, each of the sixteen Regional State Support Teams in Ohio accepts nominations from their region for the
Horn-Walter Outstanding Achievement Awards.
This year, Region 10 received ten nominations for the 2019 Franklin B. Walter Educator Award. This award is reserved for educators or educator teams that have made exemplary contributions to the education of students with disabilities. One of the nominees from our region will be honored at the annual awards luncheon hosted by the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities this summer.
The nominees from our region will be profiled in a series of social media spotlights on our Facebook page during Teacher Appreciation Week,
May 6 – 10th. Click on a name to read all about these terrific educators from our region!
Please join us as we celebrate the recognition of these teachers’ contributions to special education!
Meet Lou Ann Haburn – a 2019 Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator nominee from Region 10!
A teacher that has a passion for seeing her students grow socially and academically, Lou Ann teaches at Miami Valley Career Technology Center working with students with identified learning, language, and social needs. She was nominated by Special Education Coordinator, Melissa Iser.
In her nomination, Iser tells us that Lou Ann is a life changer for her students as she creates real world experiences and hands-on learning opportunities that bring math and science to life. “For many of our students, these experiences have allowed them lifetime ‘firsts’...experiences they wouldn’t have had otherwise.”
“Lou Ann blends the content standards with real life lessons that have meaning far beyond the classroom, and she does so with understanding and compassion for the students,” says Iser.
A 35-year veteran teacher, when we asked what made her choose education Lou Ann told us her parents were house parents in a children’s home for children with special needs and she knew growing up she had a passion for working with children. “I enjoy watching the student that doesn’t talk to anyone at the beginning of the year become a social butterfly by the end of the year, or watching that moment when a student understands a new concept for the first time.”
That’s what it’s all about.
Congratulations on your nomination Lou Ann!
