Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) partnered with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) during the 2019- 2020 school year to allow ten seniors to work in the skilled trades field with the 88th Civil Engineering Squadron at the Base. Through the MVCTC Work- Based Learning Program, coordinated by Eric Dolan and Robert Ewry, the students were afforded this amazing opportunity. All ten students have been hired fulltime at WPAFB after graduating in the Spring of 2020.

MVCTC and members of Wright-Patterson’s leadership worked for nearly a year to develop this unique partnership.
The result of this planning was high school students expanding their career-technical knowledge of skilled trades while earning a good wage. The MVCTC Work-Based Learning Program also allows WPAFB to meet the mission of maintaining its infrastructure.
For the 2020-2021 school year, MVCTC has worked with WPAFB to expand the program to include students in Computer Networking & Cyber Security as well as Natural Resource Management.Layla Hatfield, a Natural Resource Management student from Valley View, is participating in an internship for the Natural Resources Department at WPAFB. She helps to manage their native prairie and works on conservation efforts with the endangered Indiana Bat, as well as maintaining native habitats and conducting wildlife surveys.Antonio Copher, a Computer Networking & Cyber Security student from Trotwood-Madison has been hired by a WPAFB contractor to work on the base.He is working for the AFRL Griffiss Institute.WPAFB still plans to partner with MVCTC to hire additional students from Construction Carpentry, HVAC, and the Heavy Equipment Programs.MVCTC offers three opportunities for Work-Based Learning, Internship, Pre-Apprenticeship, and Advanced Placement. The MVCTC Work-Based Learning Program is a unique opportunity for career technical students to enter a highly skilled occupation their senior year. MVCTC has an Ohio State Apprenticeship Council Recognized Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Students receive on-the-job training with a sponsoring employer and related technical instruction at MVCTC for the skills needed to succeed in their career field. The program allows them to earn high school credits, career technical training, real-life work experience, and a paycheck, while still in high school.Currently, 104 seniors at MVCTC are participating in a Work-Based Learning Program.The students’ average pay is between $11.82 per hour and $17 per hour.Dedicated to providing premier educational choices and advanced employment preparation for youth, adults, and organizations, MVCTC has proudly served the Miami Valley since 1971.For more information about MVCTC, visit www.mvctc.com.
