MVCTC FFA Students Gain Valuable Industry Insight at Farm Science Review 2024

Englewood, Ohio—Students from several Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) FFA programs, including Diesel Power Technologies, Natural Resource Management, Retail Agriculture Services, and Veterinary Science, attended the 2024 Farm Science Review (FSR) in Columbus, Ohio, on Wednesday, September 17. The event, hosted by the Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, welcomed over 100,000 visitors, with approximately 8,000 youth participants.

The Farm Science Review offers students hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to cutting-edge research in agriculture, natural resource management, and related fields. This year’s event featured more than 130 educational presentations from industry experts, giving MVCTC students a unique chance to gain real-world knowledge that complements their classroom learning.

Retail Agriculture Services

Students from the Retail Agriculture Services program had the opportunity to engage with research-based information and practical education provided by Ohio State University faculty. They explored the latest trends in agricultural retail and gained insights into innovative technologies and best practices that can drive success in the field.

Diesel Power Technologies

Diesel Power Technologies students benefited from the wide array of equipment and machinery demonstrations, learning from top professionals in the field. With hands-on experience and access to the latest advancements in diesel technology, these students deepened their understanding of how cutting-edge machinery supports modern agriculture.

Veterinary Science

Seniors in the Veterinary Science program attended lectures at the Ask the Expert tent, where they heard from industry leaders such as Dr. Luciana da Costa, who presented on animal care and careers in veterinary science. Additionally, students explored career opportunities in Extension through an engaging presentation by Dr. Tim McDermott. These experiences provided critical insights into veterinary careers and the broad impact of agricultural science on animal health.

Natural Resource Management

Students specializing in Natural Resource Management had the unique opportunity to meet with fish biologists from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The students observed fish electroshocking survey methods, a vital assessment technique for aquatic ecosystems. This hands-on demonstration aligned with their studies and deepened their understanding of sustainable resource management practices.

The Farm Science Review remains an essential educational event for MVCTC students, providing them with the tools and knowledge to excel in their respective fields. By participating in this event, students take significant steps toward preparing for the dynamic and evolving world of agriculture, natural resources, and veterinary science.
