DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN)– In this sponsored segment, the senior class at Miami Valley Career Technology Center are gearing up to take on the world. But it turns out, they don’t have to wait until graduation to do so. Several programs are advancing their students from mannequins and virtual training to real-life scenarios with the public!

“It’s intimidating at first since we’re used to working on mannequins and not actual people but it’s awesome when we do so we get a feel of what it’s like working in a real salon,” said MVCTC Senior Shakira Denlinger.

After a two-year pause due to construction, MVCTC’s premier salon is open to the public! It’s allowing students to get real hands-on experience all under instructor supervision. One of their most popular clients, Superintendent Nick Weldy.

“So excited, it feels like a real salon, students are excited to be in there and working on clients at this point,” said Superintendent Weldy. “Teachers are teaching the state board curriculum, students are ready to get the license and be practicing cosmetologists, a very exciting time.”

When your hair, nails or facial is complete, you can actually grab a bite to eat at MVCTC’s hottest lunch spot 68 Hundred Bistro, open to the public.

“They’re getting to work on pastries, work on meats, vegetables and high end meals,” said Superintendent Weldy. “Now, they can go onto Culinary Institute of America or a higher level post secondary training program, this gives them a wonderful foundation of working in a high end restaurant or cruise ships when they finish their education.”

“You’ll hear in some workforce circles that’s a major area of concentration, there’s just not enough early childhood providers,” said Superintendent Weldy. “A lot of mothers are wanting back in the workforce but child care is very expensive and hard to find high quality, so we’re doing our part and getting as many highly qualified students out and getting them in the workforce as soon as possible.”

That all goes to say, hard work pays off. Miami Valley CTC received a 5 Star Report Card from the Ohio Department of Education Workforce, it’s the highest rating you can receive as a school district. And the students are the prime example why.

“I definitely feel prepared to go into the career field I chose,’ said MVCTC Senior Cora Middleton. “I would say take advantage of the opportunity you get to visit here, really pay attention to what you like, your interests , because that can determine your future for the rest of your life.”
