On October 12, 2024, MVCTC Aviation Maintenance Technician female students proudly supported the Women in Aviation Huffman Prairie Chapter’s Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This exciting event aimed to inspire the next generation of aviation enthusiasts by welcoming nearly 1,000 attendees.
The event offered a unique opportunity for girls and boys to learn about the world of aviation while interacting with real-life aircraft, spanning from the early 1903 days of flight to present-day technology. Attendees participated in hands-on activities led by experienced aviation professionals, such as creating flight plans, coding robots, and building bracelets using safety wire methods.
Four dedicated MVCTC students—Kathryn Wilcox (Huber Heights), Katie Duran (Huber Heights), Genevieve Miller (Carlisle), and Destiny Jones (Brookville)—demonstrated their skills and knowledge by leading hands-on safety wiring activities. Their efforts provided young attendees with an exciting look into aviation mechanics.
MVCTC Career Exploration Coordinator Todd Engel praised the students’ participation, stating, “The Aviation Maintenance Technician female students did a wonderful job of sharing their skills and passion for aviation with the girls, boys, and parents that attended this year’s event. It was rewarding to see the smiles on the faces of the attendees and the pride in our students as they represented MVCTC.”
GIAD also introduced attendees to role models across the aviation industry, including pilots, mechanics, engineers, meteorologists, and dispatchers. These professionals, alongside the MVCTC students, helped foster a sense of excitement and possibility for the future of aviation.
