ENGLEWOOD, OH — On Monday, October 28, Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) junior students from the Media and Video Production (MVP) program experienced a fun learning opportunity during the program’s annual Billboard Trip. As part of their recent units on typography and desktop publishing, students traveled along I-70 and I-75 to analyze billboard design and effectiveness, connecting classroom concepts with real-world applications.

MVP students engaged in studies on typography and desktop publishing, learning about font choices and layout and the critical role these elements play in visual communication. The Billboard Trip, now in its 21st year, enhances these studies by allowing students to examine billboards firsthand. As they traveled, students completed worksheets to capture essential billboard typography and layout elements, identifying what makes each ad effective for its target audience.

Students also had the opportunity to meet with MVCTC alumnus Sam Newman, a 2011 MVP program graduate and current advisory committee member. Sam, now part of the team at Smartcast Media, shared his journey in the media industry and discussed the evolving landscape of digital media and advertising. Students engaged with Sam in a lively Q&A session, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths and the skills essential for success in today’s media environment.

MVCTC’s Media and Video Production program prepares students for successful careers in media-related fields, including video production and digital publishing. Field trips like the Billboard Trip exemplify MVCTC’s commitment to providing hands-on learning experiences that inspire students and connect them with professionals in their chosen fields.
