MVCTC Counselors' Corner

11/20/2024

As we near the end of the semester (December 19), school counselors are working with all students to encourage progress and passing of classes to earn credits needed for graduation AND working with seniors to complete their OhioMeansJobs Readiness Seal. OMJ Readiness Seal validation forms are due to their verifier by December 19. All students have received forms and instructions regarding this requirement to participate in the MVCTC senior recognition ceremony and count for a percentage of their final lab grade.

State testing is on the horizon and scheduled for Dec 9-13.

The tests are for students who may need to re-take past end-of-course exams, as determined by their partner school districts. Students will be receiving information on the date and location for testing through email, so please encourage them to check often and reach out with any questions. It is very important that students are in attendance on the testing dates.

Graduation

For graduation, students must earn a 684 or better on Algebra and English Language Arts II end-of-course exams and earn 2 diploma seals (1 state and 1 local seal). If the student has attempted the Algebra and ELA II test at least two times each and still has not earned the cut-off score, they will work with school counselors to fulfill requirements to meet the "Career Readiness" option towards graduation. More information about graduation requirements can be found here: https://www.unlockyourfuture.org/. Please get in touch with your student's school counselor with any specific questions or concerns.

Sophomore Career Days will be held Dec 3-5.

This is a great opportunity for students to take time to job shadow or schedule college visits when not at MVCTC. These options are a great way to help students plan for their future. Sinclair will be hosting Campus Visit Experiences specifically for MVCTC students on these dates:

  • 12/3/24 @ 1:00 P.M.
  • 12/4/24@ 4:00 P.M.
  • 12/5/24 @ 3:00 P.M.

If interested in attending, students/families must register ahead of time using this link: https://engagecms-100933.campusnexus.cloud/mvctc-campus-tour

College Financial Aid Help

To assist our college-bound seniors in preparing for important financial aid-related tasks, MVCTC will host Sinclair financial aid representatives during the school days on December 9 and December 12 to meet and share important information about FAFSA and financial aid. This is appropriate for any and all seniors who are considering post-secondary education at any institution.

The 2025-2026 FAFSA application is now live! We encourage all students and families considering post-secondary education options to complete the form ASAP! This form is required to be considered for any federal scholarships, grants, or work-study opportunities, as well as internal college aid and sometimes even local/community organizations. To prepare:

  1. Figure out who will be a family contributor: https://studentaid.gov/fafsa-apply/parents
  2. Student and contributor must each create their own FSA ID: https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch
  3. Gather needed documents: Driver's license, Social Security Numbers, tax returns (2023), records of child support received, current balances of  cash, savings, and checking accounts, and net worth of investments, businesses, and farms.
  4. Log in and complete the FAFSA application: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa

December Highlights:

  • International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3)
