Interactive Multimedia (Media and Video Production) 2010 graduate, Butch Doty, has taken the skills learned at MVCTC and created an exciting career path that has earned him industry recognition!
Butch, from Wayne High School, attended Asbury University in Wilmore, KY after completing MVCTC. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Media Communications in May of 2014. During his time in college, Butch edited over 30 productions. Most notably winning a Student Emmy in 2014 for editing the short film "Responsible".
Butch also edited the short film, “Boy Wonder", which was shown nationwide at various film festivals. “Boy Wonder” won an AVA Digital Award in 2015, and was voted “Audience Favorite for Student Production” at the Praxis Film Festival. Butch also edited the 10 episode web series "Club Swim".
With college now behind him Butch shared his future plans, “I am currently in the final weeks of editing an hour long documentary at the University of Kentucky for the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. This production discusses the correlation between energy and manufacturing in the state of Kentucky, and in particular about how possible future shifts in fuel sources and environmental regulations can impacting the manufacturing sector of the Kentucky state economy. The documentary was scheduled to be finished at the end February 2015 and shown on KET (Kentucky's PBS Station) in the following months, along with a closed-premiere for the Kentucky Legislatures.
After that, Butch plans to move to Cincinnati to begin work at Rebel Pilgrim Productions as their in house editor. He had previously interned and done freelance editing work last summer, and was hired full time earlier this year to begin at the end of the UK job. They are a media production house that does everything from commercial work, to documentaries, to live stage shows, to feature length movies. Butch said, “I first worked with them nearly 2 years ago as an Assistant Editor on a feature length film called "Hope Bridge" starring Kevin Sorbo (Hercules TV series in the 90's) and Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga, X-Men: Days of Future Past), which is being released on May 26th.
When asked how MVCTC helped prepare him for his career, Butch said, "What MVCTC gave me was a head start on figuring out what I wanted to do in a professional environment. By the end of my first year in the Interactive Multi-Media program, I had already began to figure out my niche in film editing. By the time I had entered college at Asbury University, I had already figured out I wanted to be an editor, and was able to focus all my energy into that and start perfecting my craft, while most other people in the program spent their four years trying to figure out what they wanted to do, not being able to invest much into one specific area. IMM was basically designed to give you a taste of every part of media, and see what catches on, and that is exactly what happened to me. I can honestly say that by having that head start, I became known quite well inside the college as being one of the go-to student editors, and was able to secure steady employment doing what I wanted to do even before I graduated, while many of my other colleagues are still struggling to find work in their areas of expertise."
Way to go Butch! We are very proud of your accomplishments!
