Englewood, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) Apprenticeship program continues to expand. Each year more area business partners are seeing the advantage of hiring a MVCTC student as an apprentice. For the 2015-2016 over 55 students are currently placed in Apprenticeship positions all over the Miami Valley.
The MVCTC Apprenticeship program allows students to work and earn a paycheck while learning skills and earning the certifications employers want. In most cases, an Apprenticeship student will work two weeks on a job related to their career program and then spend two weeks at school. They are responsible for keeping up on all of their academic classwork at all times. MVCTC provides students with a laptop and online resources to ensure students do not fall behind on their classwork. The work completed for the employer on the Apprenticeship counts towards the student’s career technical program grade. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain real-life work experience and oftentimes leads to full-time employment.
Select Industries Corporation in Dayton has been a valuable partner working with MVCTC to place eight students in the past several years. In 1970, Bob Whited, born and raised in the City of Dayton, started Select Tool & Die Corp. in a 5,000 Sq. Ft. space under a bar at the corner of Woodman and Patterson Rd. By November of 1972 they had outgrown their facility and relocated to 1222 E. Third Street. After a devastating fire at the original location, the City of Dayton stepped in to help the company relocate to their current location at 60 Heid Avenue in North Dayton.
Select Industries has grown to become a world-class metal forming manufacturer supplying stampings and welded sub-assemblies to many diversified industries. Select's engineering, design and tooling capabilities allow the company to work with organizations from concept through production. Tom Hebb, Sensor Applications Manager for Select Industries, hires the Apprenticeship students and works closely with the students to ensure they are successful in their Apprenticeship. Tom shared, “We currently have six Apprenticeship students working in tooling and one working in welding. I am in the process of interviewing 6 more MVCTC students. All the students we have at this time are: repairing dies, grinding, troubleshooting, milling, drilling, making jigs, fixtures, spare details and assembling dies for GM, Tesla, Ford, and Honda. Welding student, Olivia is welding dashboard components for Tesla sports cars. All the students pitch in on keeping the shop clean and safe. MVCTC is supplying us with great students.”
