On Thursday, September 8th the Valley View-MVCTC FFA Chapter competed in the Montgomery County Soils Career Development Event. The event was held at the Sycamore Conservation Education Demonstration Farm in Trotwood, Ohio. Those students who attended included Tanner Cordes, Faith Eller, Ann Frazier, Anna Grant, Haley Hall, Andrew Henry, Mackenzie Hoog, Jordan Johnson, Shaianne McGlaughlin, Ryan Michael, Lane Murphy, Jacob Phelps (11th individual), Clayton Simpson, Taylor Thomas, Kelsey Wight, and Mercedes Woodson.
The students valuated land and soil to determine its potential for urban, home site, and other non-farm uses. Students were assessed on their general knowledge on soil science as well as the ability to locate information from soil topography maps. Additionally, students will be evaluated 4 soil pits to analyze soil properties and overall degree of limitations to further determine whether or not that site can be used for buildings with basements, sewage treatment systems, driveways and local roads, and/or lawns, gardens, and landscaping.
The following students will be continue on to the district competition in Darke County on Wednesday, September 28th: Tanner Cordes, Ann Frazier, Anna Grant, Haley Hall, Jordan Johnson, Jacob Phelps, Clayton Simpson, and Mercedes Woodson.
