On September 11, 2014, the Valley View-MVCTC FFA Chapter participated in the Montgomery County Rural Soils Career Development Event (CDE). 30 members competed in the contest that took place on Fuls Road in New Lebanon and was organized by the Montgomery County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Members evaluated three soil pits for rural use through an assessment of the land’s slope, erosion, horizon depth, and natural drainage. Next members determined land capability in terms of limitations and management practices for agricultural production. They also identified the most intensive cropping system used on the land and they selected recommended conservation practices. Additionally, members completed a general knowledge test over soil science and a test over local soils using the book, Soil Survey of Montgomery County, Ohio.
Members competing in the CDE included: Emily Bell, Shane Bevington, Brayden Bishop, Chris Boyle, Mike Boyle, Colten Branham, Hunter Cantrell, Dave Chaney, Abbie Collins, Bailey DeGroat, Miranda Dunham, Austin Eckhardt, Jessica Hadley, Peyton Henderson, Jordan Johnson, Zane, Kozarec, Matthew Martin, Katy Monnig, Austin Moore, Austin Napier, Tim Peck, Joe Reedy, Jeremy Smith, Josiah Smith, Garrett Stevenon, Josh Tays, Anna Warnick, Tyler White, Myles Woodard, Mercedes Woodson.
The top eight team members will be competing in the district CDE on September 25, 2014.
