On September 25, 2014, the Valley View-MVCTC FFA Chapter participated in the Montgomery District Rural Soils Career Development Event (CDE). 8 members competed in the contest that took place at Dull Homestead Farm on Air Hill Road in Brookville. The contest judge was soil scientist, Mr. George Derringer, from the United States Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service in Englewood.
Members evaluated three soil pits for rural use through an assessment of the land’s slope, erosion, horizon depth, and natural drainage. Next members determined land capability in terms of limitations and management practices for agricultural production. They also identified the most intensive cropping system used on the land and they selected recommended conservation practices. Additionally, members completed a general knowledge test over soil science and a test over local soils using the book, Soil Survey of Montgomery County, Ohio.
Members competing in the CDE included: Emily Bell, Brayden Bishop, Mike Boyle, Abbie Collins, Miranda Dunham, Zane, Kozarec, Anna Warnick, and Mercedes Woodson. The team placed 20th overall. The highest placing team member was Abbie Collins. She placed 52nd out of 196 participants.
