On Tuesday, September 16 the Miami County Soil and Water Conservation District coordinated the Miami County FFA Soils Career Development Event.
This is the first Miami County FFA Soils Contest in many years. Schools competing in the contest were Covington FFA, Miami East-MVCTC FFA, Milton-Union-MVCTC FFA and Newton FFA. There were 16 individuals in the Rural Contest and 17 in the Urban Contest.
In the Urban Soils FFA Contest Emily Thimmes (Miami East) was the highest individual in the contest. Caitlin Fryman (Miami East) was the third overall. The team placed first. Additional Miami East contestants were Zac Gordon, Micah Gaines, and Cameron Coomes.
In the Rural Soils FFA Contest Lance Reynolds (Miami East) was the highest individual in the contest. The Miami East team placed second. Additional Miami East contestants were Dawson Kingrey, Jacob Rife, and Eli Gillum.
Milton-Union MVCTC placed first in the Rural Soils Contest. Team member Larkin Welbaum (Milton-Union) placed second and Daniel Albaugh (Milton-Union) placed third. The team consisted of Kassidy Thompson, Abby Hissong, Daniel Albaugh, Jordan Cress, Larkin Welbaum, Kamron Paulus, Imants Braslins, Colton Craport.
The contest consisted of evaluating three soils pit for slope, erosion, drainage, depth, and soil texture. Also, the contestants took a written test and answered questions from the soil survey
